Honors Program in Business and Economics
The Honors Program in Business and Economics offers a unique, rigorous, and challenging academic experience to a select group of students each year. The program is designed to enhance and complement the education of those students admitted to the Honors College who wish to pursue any major in the School of Business and Economics. The selection process is competitive. Admission Students who apply to the College of Charleston and to the Honors College, who note a preference for any major in the School of Business and Economics, and who are accepted into the College of Charleston Honors Program in Business and Economics. Because of the cohesive nature of the program, students are admitted only as entering Freshmen. In addition to academic achievement, candidates are evaluated on their leadership skills and activities, social diversity, creativity, and community service activities. Application Process Students interested in the Honors Program in Business & Economics apply through the Honors College application: 1. Prospective students apply to the Honors College 2. Applicants note a preference on the application for any major in the School of Business and Economics 3. Applicants are accepted into the Honors College 4. Applications of accepted students are reviewed by the School of Business and Economics Honors Program Committee based on the indication of a School of Business and Economics major 5. Successful applicants are notified of their admission into the program Academic Requirements Honors College Requirements Activities of the Honors Program in Business and Economics are coordinated with the Honors College to provide opportunities for students to interact with honors students in other programs of study. Students complete all requirements of the Honors College. School of Business and Economics Requirements In addition to the Honors College requirements, students complete all requirements for the particular business program in which the student chooses to major. Special Honors sections of many required courses in business and economics are offered specifically to Honors College students. These intellectually challenging courses are small, allowing fro more intensive student participation, and are accelerated to meet the needs of superior students. Participants in the program are given the opportunity to work independently with faculty in completing the Bachelor’s Essay. Special Program Components Mentoring Program The mentorship program is based on the idea of a “mentoring chain reaction” to teach students to rely on each other for support and counsel and to begin to develop a life-long network of contacts. Through mentoring “teams”, upper-class honors students mentor incoming students, and alumni of the program mentor upper-class students, creating a community of scholars working together to encourage, support, and assist each other. Service Leadership Program Each honors program student participates in a service learning project in a leadership capacity, using available campus resources to develop skills related to self-awareness, self-management, interpersonal relationships, and organization leadership. International Experience Students in the Honors Program in Business & Economics spend the spring semester of the Junior year at a College of Charleston partner university in a business program. The international experience reinforces the concept of business as a global entity operating in a diverse world.
